Three Types of Winter Clothing Donations That Will Help Your Community

Where to donate household items

In some parts of the United States, the temperatures have dropped into the negatives as snow has fallen and ice has set over roads and homes. During times with extreme cold, most people simply turn the heat up and stay in or they put on several layers of clothing before heading outside. But not everyone is lucky enough to be able to stay someplace warm, and some don’t always have everything they need to stay comfortable this season.

However, there are many ways that you can go about helping families in need in your community, from volunteering with a church or shelter to collecting food donations for a local charity organization. Many groups also look to people to donate clothes during the winter in order to help adults and children keep warm.

Why should you donate clothes? Simply put, donating clothing to charity is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself, your community, and the planet. You get the chance to clean out your closets and drawers and give to those in need; by giving instead of throwing these items away, you help the environment by not contributing to the annual 12 to 13 million tons of clothing and textiles that get thrown away.

If you’re interested in helping others by giving your gently used clothing donations to local organizations, here are three types of clothing you should consider giving during the winter:

  • Cold weather clothing: In the winter, the more layers you can wear the better in order to keep warm. If you have any sweaters, sweatshirts, fleeces, long-sleeved shirts, jeans, or other warm clothing that you no longer wear, be sure to give them to charity.
  • Outerwear: For some people, a new or gently used coat can make all the difference as they go about their daily routines in the winter. In addition to donating coats, you can also give accessories, such as hats, gloves, scarves, and boots, to help others stay warm.
  • Clothing for kids: Finally, don’t forget about children this season, either. Many young kids may have grown out of their previous winter clothing, so make sure to give these items to charity once your own kids have outgrown their old winter clothes.
