Across the United States, house cleaning services are an important and helpful way for many families to make sure their homes are clean and organized in spite of their hectic schedules. However, even the busiest agendas pale in comparison to the trials and tribulations faced by people with life-threatening diseases, such as cancer: in addition to the constant doctors appointments and other meetings, these patients often feel too sick from their symptoms and treatments to complete even basic cleaning tasks. For this reason, a number of maid services now offer their time to help people with cancer clean their homes for free.
The non-profit organization Cleaning for a Reason started in 2006 with the goal of recruiting house cleaning services around the country to help cancer patients mop, sweep, vacuum, dust and more, all free of charge. Today, there are over 1,200 businesses involved with the project, ranging from house cleaning Clearwater, FL to Los Angeles, CA. The organization has even added partners in Canada. And these house cleaning services are often serious about their work: Cleaning for a Reason has helped clean the homes of over 17,000 people.
There are requirements for joining the program: according to one involved business, the Nashville-based Two Maids and a Mop, Cleaning for a Reason requires that new services take on two cancer patients at a time. Their branch does five. This allows the non-profit’s house cleaning services to really have an impact in local patients’ lives, and many people say they have succeeded. Patients who have had their homes cleaned say that having a clean home helps protect their weakened immune system and also makes their lives seem a little more manageable. And, of course, it provides a nice break from trying to juggle their basic responsibilities, treatments, research and more. While many say that they’re lucky to have the support of family and friends, they also said that having a business help by cleaning their house for free was incredible.
