Donating Clothes to Charity Why the Homeless Need Everything They Can Receive

The homeless in America need as much help and compassion as they can get. They are not lazy or dumb. They’re not mean or ungrateful. They are people who for various reasons are down on their luck, who have nowhere to go and no one to turn to. The homeless are those who truly cannot help themselves and for that they public should be more aware of their problems — and, truth be told, their existence.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, there are over 600,000 homeless people in any given night. Nearly a quarter of them are children. As terrible as it is to hear, there is a severe homelessness problem in the United States, the richest country in the world. And in terms of helping the least fortunate, the figures about charitable giving are less encouraging to say the least. Corporate donors made up only 5% of all charitable giving in 2013. That same year, the education sector gave 16% and individual donors gave a whopping 72% (or $240 billion)!

Although all charitable donations are equally precious, the uncomfortable fact is that the people and institutions that can donate the most ironically donate the least, leaving other sectors to make up for it. As a result, the homeless are without the aid and resources they very well could have had.

Donating clothes to charity is one way to make up for the lack of aid. Charitable clothing donations are a wonderful, compassionate, and also quite an easy way to give back to the community, especially those who cannot clothe themselves. Clothing donations for non profit organizations aren’t hard to come by. After all, nearly everyone has a discarded t-shirt or pair of socks they no longer wear. Why not donate them to people who would actually, and gratefully, wear them?
