Kids Don’t Have to Have All the Fun, Adult Onesie Pajamas Are Here to Stay

Pajama onesies adults

Do you wear pajamas? Nearly three quarters of all American adults say that they do. Men wash their pajamas more often than women. They say they go about two weeks before they throw them in the wash whereas women go about 17 days. Many adults have fond memories of wearing footed pajamas. These were fun and whimsical in a way. We remember them fondly because they bring back good memories of our childhoods. The good new is that we do not have to remember them and go back to boring PJs for adults, adult pajamas onesies have made a comeback.

The adult onesie was actually created, not to remind people of their childhood, but because they kept people warm. These PJs for adults first hit the fashion scene in the 17th century. It was a short lived fad in England but the idea was revived by the 1880s. That is when a number of clothing manufacturers were selling a version of what we think of today as the onesie. They were not exactly what we see today but they were close.

These PJs for adults came back again in the 1930s. Many adults bought fancy onesie pajamas for adults. Men and women wore silk onesies. The fashion trend got a huge bump when Winston Churchill admitted that he wore these PJs for adults because he found them so comfortable. This was a revolutionary turning point in the history of the onesie pajama.

During World War II, designers came up with a one piece garment to cover an entire person and they called it a siren suit. This was designed primarily for people to wear in air raid shelters. It provided people with the warmth they needed while covering them up for modesty reasons. The style was a lot like the suits worn by brick layers and mechanics.

While baby boomers in the 1950s began using onesies for kids because they provided an easy way to keep children warm in colder climates, it was not until the 1970s that adult onesie pajamas made a real comeback. In 2072, Geoffrey Hoyle wrote a novel called “2010: Living in the Future.” Hoyle envisioned a world where much of life would be automated and people would only wear jumpsuits and everyday street clothing would look a lot like PJs for adults.

Things did not work out that way (thankfully) but onesies pajamas are ridiculously comfortable. Men, women and children all love to wear them to bed and famous people have been seen wearing them when the are out and about. Celebrities from Brad Pitt to Beyonce have been seen in them. They come in all colors and patterns. If you love animals, you can find animal onesie pajamas for adults.

Today, onesies are worn by both men and women of all ages, primarily because of how comfortable and warm they are as lounge-wear. Even many celebrities have been photographed wearing onesies in public as a sign that they are fashionably hit or perhaps just want to be comfortable. Famous Hollywood actors like Brad Pitt have been spotted wearing onesies of varying colors and patterns.

In 1998, the fashion company Jumpin Jammerz put out onesie PJs for adults as a gimmick. They were working to publicize Steve Pandi’s punk band but the press stunt turned into a fad. These onesies showed up on FOX’s hit TV show “MadTV” in 2001 and then on “CSI: Las Vegas.”

Lest you think that the trend petered out after that, in 2012 the company hosted what can only be described as the “Largest Footed Pajama Party.” That is what the Guinness Book of World Records called it. The party was held on March 11, 2012 at the annual music festival “South by Southwest,” in Austin, Texas. At least 309 guests attended the soiree wearing onsie PJs for adults.

Whether you are young, old or somewhere in between, the onsie pajama is more than just a fashion statement or a way to stay warm during a cold winter in Minnesota, these pajamas are fun. They make great gifts and bring whimsy to everyone. They can also be found in every size and for every taste.
